In Focus: Somu Desai, Contemporary Visual Artist

Somu Desai(B.1969), whose artistic practice explores the relationship between material, form, and visual expression. Drawing from the landscapes of South Gujarat, his work reflects the changing realities of the region. Adapting to the region’s harsh climatic conditions, Desai uses industrial-grade paints and techniques of layering and weathering. Through his distinctive use of materials and techniques, Desai creates works that examine the relationship between nature, industry, and the environment.

At our curated, guided walk-through at India Art Fair, Ahmedabad, we brought together selected works from across galleries.

Through conversations around the artists, their practices and the ideas behind their works, we created a more informed and meaningful way to experience the fair.

It was lovely to hear that the walk helped people connect with the fair in a more personal way. That’s what makes sharing art so rewarding.

Art & Space, curated for you.

ArtBela Studio is a space where art, experience, and conversations come together.

Because a space can do more than hold art. It can shape how we experience it, bring people together, and become part of the story itself.

From a private viewing to an intimate gathering, an artist presentation, or simply a moment spent with art - every experience at ArtBela Studio is thoughtfully curated around you.

This space is for you.

A delightful walk through Baronet House, Ahmedabad, with @indiaartfair for IAF EDI+IONS.

There was something special about seeing the works in a space with its own history and character - and noticing how the art complemented the legacy of Baronet House.

Walking through the galleries with curious minds, exchanging perspectives, asking questions, and talking about art, architecture, and spaces made the experience all the more special.

We’re glad to have been part of India Art Fair’s journey into Ahmedabad - a city with such a rich cultural and artistic identity.

Before it became a symbol, it was simply a dove.

Before it became a symbol, it was simply a dove.

In 1949, Picasso's The Dove (La Colombe) appeared on the poster for the World Congress of Peace. Its simplicity was part of its power: a single bird, stripped of everything unnecessary, became an image that could travel far beyond the artwork itself.

Perhaps that is what makes certain images stay with us.

We don't just recognise them.
We learn to see something in them.

Beyond sustainability, can art help restore?

Regenerative Art explores how artists can work with ecosystems, natural processes and living systems - allowing nature to become an active participant in the work.

From Agnes Denes’ wheat field on a Manhattan landfill to Rashmi Kaleka’s collaboration with termites and Balasubramaniam’s earth-and-water works at the 2026 Venice Biennale, these practices rethink what art can leave behind.

Perhaps the future of art isn’t only about what we create, but what we help regenerate.

Save this post to explore three artists rethinking art, nature and regeneration.

The first time you look at a painting, you see what’s in front of you.

Look again, and you might notice what you missed.

A small gesture.
A hidden detail.
A texture.
A story that feels different the second time around.

Our time in Paris offered a closer look at the final, remarkably inventive chapter of Henri Matisse’s practice.

From his iconic cut-outs to interiors and stained glass, colour and form moved beyond the canvas, blurring the boundaries between art, design and architecture.

His late work is a powerful reminder that reinvention can happen at any stage of an artist’s journey.

We spend so much time keeping up with the art world — its markets, its moments, its momentum. But how often do we pause to understand it?

The History, Insights & Story of Art, a 26-session programme by The Associated Art Academy, begins 9 September in Delhi. 45 days. That’s all it asks of you to look closer, know deeper, and see art the way it was meant to be seen.

sā Ladakh Biennale 2026 doesn't just bring art to Ladakh - it listens to it.

Across 230 km, from Leh to Kargil, through 8 locations shaped by wind, altitude and memory, artists from Ladakh, India and beyond have made work that belongs to this land, not just placed upon it. Every piece carries the weight of local knowledge, the quiet of the mountains, the pulse of communities who have lived with this landscape for generations.

Curated around Signals from Another Star, this inaugural edition asks us to slow down and really see - our relationship with land, with memory, with the fragile, beautiful systems that hold us all together.

This is regenerative art in its truest sense: not art that simply visits a place, but art that gives something back - to the soil, the stories, the people.

There are no white walls here. No glass cases. No distance between you and the work.

Just the open sky, the silence of high-altitude desert, and art that asks to be walked through, breathed in, felt.

Not an exhibition. Not an event.

A journey - through art, landscape, and the soul of a place that has always known how to endure.

Some artists carve stone. Some cast bronze.
Mrinalini Mukherjee chose fibre.

Through dyed hemp, rope, and intricate hand-knotting, she created sculptures that feel alive; part body, part plant, part mythic presence.

At a time when fiber was often seen as craft, Mukherjee insisted on its power as sculpture. Her work continues to challenge the boundaries between art, material, tradition, and form.

Before maximalism became a global trend, India had already mastered the language of abundance.

From miniature paintings that unfold countless narratives within a single frame to temple carvings where every surface carries meaning, Indian art has long embraced complexity with purpose.

Here, richness is never merely decorative. Every motif, pattern, colour and repeated form carries memory, symbolism, and generations of cultural knowledge.

Contemporary artists continue this visual language in new ways, transforming bindis, utensils, found objects, mythology and everyday materials into layered works that reward closer looking.

Perhaps maximalism isn't something India adopted.
It's a visual language India has always spoken.
